This is a simple to use frost protection for early season crop extension.
The idea is not new,... use heat from the water from the day's warmth and expell it at night. Consider it a minature greenhouse, with heating and cooling. Below is a list of advantages using the water cap system.
The cage is constructed of 9 gauge galvinized wire. It is reusable, lasting years depending on care and off-season storage. The cage is conical in shape. The top is 10 inches and the bottom is 12 inches wide. The overall height is 18 inches.
The clear .004 mil bag is 20 inches by 44 inches. The bag is not advised to be reused. During it's use during the season the bag becomes perforated with holes for different reasons. The biggest hole is the one placed when the plant reachs the top of the inside of the bag. With a knife cut an X in the top of the cage to let the plant out, careful not to damage the plant. Once the plant grows out of the cage it is susceptible to frost and leaves the caps protection. The cage also pierces the plastic at the top of the cage. This is advisable especially setting on slopes to help keep the bag in place and stable.
All vine type crops like tomatoes, cucumbers, etc... the bag is advised to be left on all season. These type of plants like the added heat around their feet. The fairly closeness of the bag also chokes out weeds from growing around base of plants. If you need to use herbicide the bag helps protect the plant from the spray/drift. If you're staking it also eliminates the need for the bottom two strings.
